| The personal use vehicle represents a tremendous investment. In order to maintain the value of this investment you need to make sure it stays looking as close to showroom condition as possible, for as long as you own it. Vehicles do not rust through in one or two years but the process of rusting begins well before that time. The evidence and damage of rust may not show up until the forth or fifth year but the rusting process has started none the less. If you are keeping a vehicle for only two or three years you may choose not to have it rust protected. However by having it done you are maintaining the vehicle and assuring more value at resale. By "Ziebarting" you car you are also prudently maintaining the vehicle in the event of financial change resulting in lengthened vehicle ownership. Having Ziebart undercoat your vehicle, should be the minimum standard for this climate. Undercoating will start the protection process and give you a quieter ride. If you are keeping your vehicle for five years or more or if you are purchasing a vehicle that is older than two years, it definitely needs to be rust protected. The vehicles 1500 + spot welds and folded lower seams will not hold up to the constant attack of moisture, salt and road grime for that long. Manufacturer warranties cover outer sheet metal only. Rust does not start there. Only a professional rust protection process coats and penetrates the seams and spot welds where rust originates. Choosing a Rustproofer When choosing a rust proofing professional be sure to ask these questions: Does this business really specialize in rust proofing or is it just another sideline of business for them? How long have they been in business? Do they have more than one location? Are they supported by a franchise? Are their written warrantees associated with the treatment? How long does the process take? Ask friends and family, neighbors, if they have recommendations of rustproofers that they have used for their own vehicles. Some shops come and go, Ziebart has been around for decades. Deal with a company you feel you can trust. You are starting a relationship you will have for many years. Warranties and Guarantees As soon as you buy your new vehicle, find out about any anti-rust products that have been used and what warrantee you have against rust and corrosion. Your new vehicle was not likely built for this climate and may need extra attention to bring it up to Manitoba standards. The treatments used and the accompanying warranty can vary from one manufacturer to another A good warrantee has very few exclusions, or clauses. It permits the customer to have service maintenance at more than one location, in other cities, in other provinces as required. Ideally the guarantee should be transferable to the next owner at no charge when you sell your car. Remember to read the fine print! Rustproofing Treatments Basically there are three types of treatments or applications for you to choose between. - Dealer applied. Done in house with a non factory rustproof chemical, using only factory drip vents and openings with a high pressure fogging method guaranteed by someone other than the applying dealer.
- Professionally applied. Factory trained technicians using individual vehicle schematics to gain access to enclosed and boxed sections, using direct spraying methods for complete coverage.
- Manufacturer applied. Manufacturer has rust protected the vehicle for the climate that the car is going to be most sold into. This would not, in most cases, include Manitoba.
